In the ever-complicated “sports movie genre,” Disney’s latest installment will be entitled “Million Dollar Arm.” It stars Jon Hamm as a baseball agent who tries to lure two cricket stars from India to come to the United States as Major League pitchers. The movie is based on a true story.
There are a couple noteworthy sports and pop culture intersections here. Besides Hamm, who participated in this year’s Celebrity All-Star game in July as part of the MLB All-Star Game festivities, there is ESPN/Grantland editor Bill Simmons. Known as the Sports Guy (although more and more rarely these days), Simmons will continue his foray into movies by serving as an executive producer on the project.
Simmons has continued to raise his profile in recent years. Starting with the creation of Grantland, his role in the creation of the 30 for 30 documentaries, and his presence on ESPN’s NBA Countdown, his ascension now continues with this project. In his podcasts (the BS Report), he also frequently discusses a fantasy football league he plays in with Hamm. So that’s…something.
Here is the trailer for Disney’s Millions Dollar Arm, which will be released in May 2014:
