Jonas Gustavsson is showing the Detroit Red Wings why he earned the nickname “Monster” during his playing days in Sweden. He’s been massive in goal for the Wings so far this season, and is doing everything he can to help the team stay afloat while they continue to get bodies back from the IR.
The netminder was the first off of the ice following this morning’s practice, and that means that he’ll get the start when Detroit takes on the New York Islanders this evening.
Guatavsson is first goalie off the ice, so he’ll be starting tonight.

Gustavsson has been starting in place of an injured Jimmy Howard since the typical No. 1 goalie went down on December 10. He’s picked up at least a point in three of those five outings, and has been shelled a bit recently as Detroit’s defense is mildly rag-tag at the moment thanks to the injury bug.
The team as a whole will have an outstanding chance to get things right prior to the league’s holiday break though, as the Islanders haven’t been particularly good this year. They’ve won twice in their last 10 contests, and should be a nice test for the Red Wings just prior to the mini-vacation.
