The 2013-14 NHL season has featured a lot of strange goals. During most seasons, we’ll see a few go in from center ice. Maybe a defenseman will accidentally clear the puck into his own net, but that’s the end of it. This year though? Things have gone off the chain completely.
The strangest tally of the year belongs to Mark Pysyk though. Forget Joe Thornton’s radical goal on Roberto Luongo. That has nothing on what happened last night between the Phoenix Coyotes and Buffalo Sabres in overtime.
With the Sabres hunting for their 10th win in 13 weeks, they managed to push the Desert Dogs to overtime. A point is a point, right? With time winding down in the extra period, Buffalo enters the offensive zone and a nearly indescribable sequence occurs.
The puck ends up in Mike Smith’s hockey pants, but the netminder doesn’t realize it. In a mad scramble to find the missing puck, Smith slides backwards into the net and puts his pads down on the ice to try to prevent the biscuit from sliding in without him seeing it. But it was in his pants. And his rear crosses the goal line.
So the Sabres won the game on one of the most ridiculous plays you’ll see all season long. Maybe ever.
