‘The Hobbit’ Holds Strong at the Box Office on Christmas Day

There was a lot of high-powered competition in the holiday mix this Christmas; however, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was able to hold strong and stay at the top of the Box Office.

Desolation of Smaug was able to pull in an estimated $9.32 million on Wednesday raising their total to $149.94 million so far.

The film, directed by Peter Jackson, is the second piece in The Hobbit trilogy set to conclude next December with The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

The film stars Sherlock actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, Luke Evans, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Richard Armitage, Lee Pace, Sir Ian McKellen, and many more.

Just behind The Hobbit is The Wolf of Wall Street, a biopic based on the life of Jordan Belfort, played in the film by Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Wolf of Wall Street brought in approximately $9.15 million, for an estimated $3,607 per theater.

The film, directed by the legendary Martin Scorsese, also stars Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey, Margot Robbie, Kyle Chandler, Jon Berenthal, and more.

Coming in third on Christmas Day was Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, the epic continuation of the story of Ron Burgundy and his friends.

Anchorman pulled in an estimated $8.1 million on Wednesday, raising its total gross to $56.7 million.

In the fourth position was the premiere of Ben Stiller’s latest film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Stiller, who also directed the film, plays Walter Mitty, a day-dreamer who escapes the monotony of his everyday life by escaping into feats of heroism and adventure. One day, when he finds his job on the line, he makes a decision to take the leap in real life and embarks on an adventure that is beyond anything in his wildest dreams.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty earned an approximate $7.8 million on Christmas Day, which is about $2,686 per theater.

Rounding out the top five is Sony Pictures film American Hustle. The film, directed by David O. Russell, pulled in an estimated $7.4 million, bringing their total to $34.14 million.
