Mike D’Antoni tells bandwagon Lakers fans to root for another team

Losers of three straight and going 3-7 in their past ten games, the Los Angeles Lakers are in a nasty funk. Combine that with the loss of Kobe Bryant for at least six weeks – just six days after he returned from an achilles injury and you have a recipe for disaster.

It’s lead to some Lakers fans expressing frustration towards D’Antoni and their team, who sit fourth in the Pacific Division at 13-16.

The Lakers coach isn’t buying it though, suggesting disgruntled Lakers fans find a new team to root for:

“If they’re discouraged, then find another team to root for,” he said testily after the Lakers lost to the Phoenix Suns, 117-90. “We’re not going to give up. Are you kidding me? Discouraged? That’s not even fair to these guys.”

He said “Discouraged?” the same way former Indianapolis Colts Coach Jim Mora incredulously exclaimed “Playoffs?” over and over after a bad loss.

It’s a pretty harsh stance from D’Antoni as he knew what he was getting into when he took the job. Of course, it’s hard to knock him considering the talent on the Lakers roster sans Bryant shouldn’t even be at the .500-ish level.
