Jordin Tootoo’s NHL comeback lasted all of eleven minutes and 45 seconds. That’s how much total ice time the abrasive forward had during his two-game recall with the Detroit Red Wings. With Henrik Zetterberg set to return to the lineup and Gustav Nyquist also ready to go, the Wings once again had a glut of healthy forwards.
Detroit deemed Tootoo the odd man out for the second time this season, and demoted him to the Grand Rapids Griffins.
The feisty forward played for the Griffins on Christmas day, and had quite a welcome back to the minors.
The Red Wings have been trying to trade Tootoo and his $1.9 million cap hit, but haven’t found any takers at this point. It’s unclear if Tootoo will continue to bounce between the two leagues once Detroit gets healthy, but the fact that he was demoted ahead of players like Riley Sheahan should tell you everything that you need to know.
Detroit decided to send Sheahan back to the minors today with the news that Zetterberg would be able to play, but it’s still a clear indicator of where Tootoo is on the proverbial depth chart. The Wings have this evening off, but will take on the Florida Panthers tomorrow.
