2013 New Era Pinstripe Bowl: Notre Dame vs. Rutgers game preview, odds and prediction

On Saturday, to kick things off for the slate of bowl games on the day, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights will battle each other inside Yankee Stadium in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl.

Notre Dame comes into the year at 8-4, just one season removed from their undefeated campaign and subsequent appearance in the BCS National Championship Game. After having to remove starting QB Everett Golson from the team before the season due to academic transgressions, the reins of the offense were handed back over to veteran Tommy Rees.

Rees was his traditional, inconsistent self, but he was effective enough to lead this team to eight wins, also getting help from yet another great Irish defensive effort.

Rutgers comes in barely bowl eligible at 6-6, battling some quarterback issues of their own with the turnover-prone Gary Nova at the helm.

In some games this year, especially against Louisville, this team could have gotten some wins had it not been for some costly, head-scratching mistakes.

Date: Dec. 28

Start Time: Noon ET

Location: Bronx, NY

Stadium: Yankee Stadium

Live Stream: WatchESPN app

Odds: Notre Dame -14

Prediction: As stated earlier, both of these teams have quarterbacks that love to make some mistakes at the worst possible times, but Notre Dame has a ton more stability overall on their side. When Rees does make a mistake, they’re terrific at regrouping themselves.

Rutgers, on the other hand, just lets all the wheels fall off.

Notre Dame 24, Rutgers 10
