The 2014 Hyundai Tournament of Champions will take place January 3-6 at the Plantation Course in Maui. All 35 winners from the 2013 PGA Tour season are invited, and according to Bob Harig of ESPN.com, 30 winners have signed up to play.
Previously, the Hyundai TOC was the first event of the new PGA Tour season. Now, the new season begins in October with the Frys.com Open. The new schedule feels different, but makes a ton of sense because the end of the FedEx Cup Playoffs should be the end of the season.
Harig notes the five players skipping the TOC are: Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Henrik Stenson, Justin Rose, and Graeme McDowell. Another notable absentee is Steve Stricker, who did not make it to the winner’s circle in 2013 despite a season that included four second place finishes.
The TOC includes a full field purse, $5.7 million, for a 30-player event. So, the player who finishes last in Maui still walks away with roughly $60,000. Not bad for a trip to Hawaii!
