Disney’s ‘Frozen’ Chills the Box Office on Friday

After weeks of the Box Office being controlled by Peter Jackson’s epic The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug; Disney’s latest animated adventure Frozen chilled the competition, taking the top spot at the Box Office on Friday.

Frozen took in $10.3 million on Friday, which is an estimated $3,075 from each theater showing the film.

Frozen is loosely based on the Hans Christian Anderson story The Snow Queen. It features the voice talents of Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad, Alan Tudyk, and more.

Since its release until Friday, the film has grossed $229.8 million in the U.S. Box Office.

Coming in a close second was The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. The second film in The Hobbit trilogy brought in almost $10.1 million. Ironically enough, The Hobbit was being played in 3,928 screens across the U.S. This is 593 more screens than Frozen is being shown on.

Friday’s numbers bring The Hobbit to a 15 day total of $170.6 million in the U.S.

In the third position on Friday was Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. Ron Burgundy and the gang brought in $7.14 million on Friday, bringing their 10 day total to just under $71.2 million.

Director David O. Russell’s American Hustle took up the fourth position earning $6.4 million. This is not a bad take considering that it is showing in about 1,000 less screens than Anchorman 2.

The film drew about $2,553 per theater on Friday, bringing its 15 day total to just under $46.9 million.

Rounding out the top 5 was Martin Scorsese’s latest film The Wolf of Wall Street, a film based on the life of real-life fallen Wall Street stockbroker Jordan Belfort, who is portrayed in the film by Leonardo DiCaprio.

The Wolf of Wall Street brought in $6.26 million, which is approximately $2,466 per theater. This is a little disappointing, as it was just Christmas day that the film’s $9.15 million that almost took the day from The Hobbit.

Friday’s take brings the film’s 3-day total to just over $22 million.
