Michael Schumacher in critical condition after accident

Racing legend Michael Schumacher, the winner of seven Formula One world championships, is in critical condition after being involved in a skiing accident over the weekend. The 44-year-old slammed his head against a rock at the Meribel ski resort in the French Alps and was put into a medically induced coma after arriving at the hospital.

Jean-Francois Payen, the head anaesthetician at the hospital where Schumacher is being treated, briefly discussed Schumacher’s condition with the media:

We can say that his condition is life-threatening.

For the moment we cannot say what Michael Schumacher’s future is. We are working round the clock – we are trying to win time.

His helmet did of course protect him at least partly. Someone who had suffered a similar accident without a helmet would not have made it here (Reuters).

We will keep you updated when more information is made available. Our hopes and prayers go out to Schumacher and his family.
