There is no bigger free agent on the market than pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, who has teams doing whatever they can to sign the prodigy including flying to his native country.
According to Nick Piecoro, the Arizona Diamondbacks are set to fly to Japan and meet with Tanaka in the near future:
Diamondbacks officials are hoping to make their sales pitch with Tanaka in person, and they appear willing to fly to Japan to facilitate a meeting, although no trip has been scheduled.
As solid of a gesture as that might be, it’s highly unlikely the Diamondbacks are the only team flying to meet with Masahiro Tanaka.
Multiple teams with elevated payrolls and loose bank accounts like the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees also plan to court the talented pitcher, making it relatively unlikely a ‘small market’ team like Arizona has much of a chance.
That said, if you don’t make an effort you’ll never know.
Tanaka would add to an already impressive offseason for the Diamondbacks, who also acquired slugger Mark Trumbo.
