A few weeks back, rumors hinted the Los Angeles Lakers were exploring the trade market for Pau Gasol. It was a notion the Lakers rejected towards the media, but according to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the Los Angeles Lakers were indeed shopping Gasol and offered him up in a trade to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for center, Brook Lopez. The exploratory talks were before Lopez went down with a season ending injury.
Sources with knowledge of the discussions told ESPN.com that the Lakers did indeed engage the Nets earlier this month in some exploratory talks to see if Brooklyn had interest in such a swap. Sources say that the Nets balked at the idea when it was presented before Lopez’s injury, but it’s still noteworthy if it happened.
The Lakers do have some cap room next season as they currently stand (assuming they do not re-sign Gasol) so adding any money would all but extinguish any available space.
Of course, adding Lopez may have been worth that but there was little reason for Brooklyn to engage in such a deal which would essentially be nothing more than a salary dump.
