The Arizona State Sun Devils looked uninspired against the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the National University Holiday Bowl on Monday night, falling behind 27-13 before halftime. After the game, which Texas Tech won 37-23 thanks to a strong performance from Davis Webb, Arizona State head coach Todd Graham blamed himself and the coaching staff for his team’s poor performance.
It’s not the players’ fault, that’s why they hire coaches, to get your guys ready to play. We didn’t get our guys ready to play and on the other hand the other team did … I was embarrassed for our fans that showed up today that we did such a poor job of having our guys prepared to play. I love these players, tremendous group of seniors. Guys gave us everything they had. Really proud of them. Absolutely zero excuses. We just didn’t show up as a coaching staff and didn’t have our guys prepared to play.
Despite the lackluster end to the season, the Sun Devils still had a 2013 they can be proud of. The team, sporting one of the best offenses in the nation, won 10 games and surged to the top of the Pac-12 South. With many of their offensive weapons slated to return in 2014, the Sun Devils should be a team worth keeping an eye on for years to come. Still, Monday’s loss will sting for a bit, and it will be interesting to see if the Sun Devils come out with a chip on their shoulder next season.
