Sad news coming out of Atlanta today, as Dave Martin, Associated Press Photographer, has passed away after he collapsed moments after Texas A&M defeated Duke in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Martin ran onto the field and took some photographs of Kevin Sumlin and the Aggies, when he collapsed onto the field, and was pronounced dead early Wednesday morning, according to Fox News.
He suffered an apparent heart attack, and was administered CPR on the field. He was 59 years old, and had been with the Associated Press since 1983.
“Dave Martin was an excellent photojournalist, a consummate and dedicated professional and a wonderful person,” AP Vice President and Director of Photography Santiago Lyon said in a statement. “Wherever his work took him he made many friends and will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.”
He was based out of Birmingham, Alabama, and had been on major sporting events around the world for the AP during his tenure. His friends referred to him as “Mullet” and it seems as if he was loved by everyone who came into contact with him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Dave Martin’s family and friends. He will be missed, and his work for the AP was really impressive. Sports always take a backseats to tragedies like this.
