MLB rumors: Boston Red Sox not expected to trade Will Middlebrooks

The Boston Red Sox are still reportedly interested in bringing back shortstop Stephen Drew, who is currently doing whatever he can to secure a long term deal in free agency.

It’s a deal the Red Sox are understandably reluctant to give Drew, who has drawn interest from teams like the New York Mets. However, Drew remains without a deal and speculation is that he may return to Boston on a one-year contract, assuming no team offers him a multi-year deal.

Even if that’s the case, don’t expect the Boston Red Sox to trade fellow infielder Will Middlebrooks, this according to Peter Gammons:

Righthanded corner power is hard enough to come by, so do not look for Middlebrooks to be dumped.

With Drew handling the shortstop position last season and the young Xander Bogaerts playing his way into the lineup, the Red Sox were forced to send the struggling Middlebrooks down to AAA.

The time on the farm allowed the powerful third baseman to regain his stroke and he proved to be an effective bat down the stretch for Boston.

Add in his solid defense and youth and there’s little reason for Boston to part with him.
