A few days back, reports began to surface suggesting the Arizona Diamondbacks front office planned to fly to Japan where they would attempt to woe free agent starter, Masahiro Tanaka.
And while that was a nice plan, few expected it to be worthwhile as the Diamondbacks weren’t exactly expected to be in the mix for Tanaka’s services when all was said and done.
However, according to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Diamondbacks can’t be ruled out as major players in the Tanaka sweepstakes:
The Arizona Diamondbacks cannot be ruled out as major players for Japanese right-hander Masahiro Tanaka, not after giving serious consideration to free-agent outfielder Shin-Soo Choo.
Of course, Rosenthal seems to suggest the Diamondback’s shouldn’t be ruled out simply because of financial reasons, which is understandable. However, it’s highly unlikely Tanaka would opt to pitch in Arizona instead of major markets like Los Angeles, Chicago or New York. Then there’s also the rumors about Tanaka landing in Seattle due to the high Japanese influence.
Regardless of where he does end up, willing to spend money or not, the Diamondbacks don’t appear to be a top suitor at this time.
