Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams will meet in the final of the Brisbane International on Saturday, renewing one of the best budding rivalries in tennis.
Williams advanced to the final thanks to a victory over Maria Sharapova on Friday. The win extended Williams’ winning streak over Sharapova to 14 matches.
Speaking with reporters after her match, Williams said that she’s glad to face such stiff competition in the first tournament of the year:
(I) feel like I’m being pushed into the deep end straightaway. I think it’s a good thing. In Melbourne if I have to face Maria again I’ll know a little bit more what to expect. I really didn’t know what to expect today (Reuters).
Azarenka, seeded second in the tournament, advanced to the final by way of a 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Jelena Jankovic.
Williams and Azarenka have met 17 times since 2008, with Azarenka managing three wins during that stretch. The two last met at the 2013 U.S. Open, with Williams emerging victorious.
