The Notre Dame Fighting Irish Men’s Basketball team had a tough task in their first game as a full-fledged member of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Saturday as they welcomed in the seventh-ranked Duke Blue Devils.
Well, it didn’t seem to them as if it was anything tough at all as the Irish stunned the Blue Devils on their home court in South Bend, 79-77.
Notre Dame guard Demetrius Jackson hit two free throws down the stretch in the second half to give the Irish the 79 points that they would need to hold off the Blue Devils in this one.
Duke led the game by just two at the half at 37-35. But Notre Dame outscored the Blue Devils 44-40 in the final 20 minutes to announce themselves to the entire ACC with authority with this tremendous win.
Three Notre Dame starters finished in double-figures against Duke, led by guard Eric Atkins who dropped on 19 points and added 11 assists to give himself the double-double against the Blue Devils defense.
With the win, Notre Dame improves to 10-4 on the year and 1-0 on the conference, while Duke drops to 11-3 and starts 0-1 in the ACC.
