Li Na has defended her title at the Shenzhen Open on Saturday. Na beat Peng Shuai in straight sets 6-4, 7-5, for what was just the second-ever all-Chinese final on the WTA Tour, according to the Associated Press.
Li captured her eighth career WTA title and first since Shenzhen last year. Peng is now winless in six finals.
The No. 3-ranked Li is hoping to build momentum heading into the Australian Open, where she has reached the final in two of the past three years. She lost to Victoria Azarenka in last year’s final and fell to Kim Clijsters in 2011.
Li Na is starting the new year in the best way possible, with a big win, and a title defense. Not to mention some extra cash in her pocket too. And according to upi.com,
It was the eighth WTA title for Li but first since she won at Shenzhen last year. She had three runner-up finishes, including at the Australian Open and the WTA Championships, between those titles and is 8-11 in finals overall.
Peng has made title matches six times but is yet to win a WTA tournament.
The Shenzhen title comes with $111,163 for Li. She’s won about $13.4 million in her career. Peng’s career winnings total $4.8 million after she collected $55,323 Saturday as the tournament runner-up.
