In the latest edition of their longstanding rivalry, Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt defeated Switzerland’s Roger Federer 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the final of the Brisbane International on Sunday.
The win marked both the ninth time in his career that Hewitt has defeated Federer and the first time he’s beaten the Swiss tennis star in 15 matches. It was also Hewitt’s first tournament title in over three years.
Assessing his performance after the match, Federer said that while he’s disappointed he didn’t capture the Brisbane title, his play over the weekend boosted his confidence for the upcoming Australian Open:
I was able to sort of serve better overall, more consistent this week than I have in a long time – so that’s very good. I definitely needed a little bit more confidence to play well and hopefully win the tournament and so forth. I have a clear idea what I need to work on and I have a clear idea where my mind and body is at (Reuters).
Both Hewitt and Federer are slated to participate in the Australian Open. The first major tournament of the 2014 tennis season will run from Jan. 13 through Jan. 26.
