Auburn vs Florida State: How to bet the 2014 BCS National Championship game

The No. 2 Auburn Tigers and No. 1 Florida State Seminoles are squaring off tonight in the BCS Championship game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.  It is an intriguing match up and should be a fun game to watch.

If you aren’t invested in either team emotionally making a friendly wager with some friends or the guy at the bar with you can make it more interesting. It can make it more fun to have  aside to root for.

Right now Sporting News’ Linemakers has Florida State as an -8½ favorite over Auburn. That is a two-score win.

Picking a winner against the spread will be difficult. Both Auburn and Florida State have been successful with an 11-2 record against the spread. The interesting stat here is that Florida State has been the favorite in every game they’ve played.

Five times this season Auburn has been an underdog and they’ve come out 5-0 against the spread in those match ups when they were under dogs.

If you go purely by scoring averages, Auburn wouldn’t cover the spread. Offensively the Tigers are scoring 40.2 points per game while the Seminoles are scoring an average of 53 points. That is a spread of 12.8 points, enough to cover the spread.

Defensively the Tigers are giving up an average of 24 points per game while the Seminoles are giving up only 10.7 points, a spread of 13.3 points and again, enough to cover the spread.

Of course the Seminoles have been playing against the ACC while the Tigers have faced stiffer competition in the SEC. I’d still take Auburn to cover the spread in this game.
