On Monday afternoon, it was announced that UFC president Dana White would be appearing on ESPN’s SportsCenter for a special announcement. In the past, White has used SportsCenter to announce upcoming big fights, so there was plenty of anticipation about what the announcement could be.
The major speculation was that White would be announcing a date and location for a middleweight title fight between current champion Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort. The other thought was that he could announce coaches for season 20 of The Ultimate Fighter reality show.
When White made his appearance, he announced that UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz would be vacating the title after suffering yet another injury.
With the injury, Cruz is forced to vacate the title and he will be replaced in the UFC 169 main event by his arch rival, Urijah Faber, who will now be getting the shot against new champion Renan Barao on just three weeks notice.
At this point in Cruz’s career, we have to wonder whether or not he will ever be able to return to the octagon ever again.
