MLB Rumors: Cleveland Indians expected to sign Jeff Francoeur

The Cleveland Indians are in need of some depth, which is why they’re expected to sign outfielder Jeff Francoeur to a minor league deal – this according to Jerry Crasnick:

Jeff Francoeur is close to agreement on a minor league deal with the #indians, source says.

Francoeur most recently played for the San Francisco Giants, though struggled mightily and was released.

That said – woeful with the stick or not, Francoeur is a very serviceable defender in the outfielder and even at a declining at, still has one of the best cannon arms in baseball.

The deal is not guaranteed so there’s little to lose for the Indians, outside of a Spring Training roster invite.

It’s not known how solid of a shot Francoeur will have to make the Indians’ final roster once the Spring concludes, though it is believed the deal was made with hopeful intentions that Francoeur would become a bench player for the Tribe moving forward.

He will also provide some insurance against left handed pitching as he’s a career .285 hitter against southpaws.

He batted .194 last year. He will fit in with the rest of the low average batters we already have. Why do we keep signing castoffs and has beens?
Nothing has been done to shore-up our hitting this off season.
