Martina Navratilova predicts Serena Williams will surpass 20 grand slam titles

According to tennis legend Martina Navratilova, U.S. tennis superstar Serena Williams is not only likely to win the upcoming Australian Open, ergo tying Navratilova for total grand slam titles with 18, but she’s also likely to surpass 20 grand slam victories, a mark that would put her in elite company as only Margaret Court (24) and Steffi Graf (22) have achieved that level of dominance.

Navratilova told reporters in Adelaide that Williams’ age — she’ll turn 33 this year — and the fact she’s currently playing her best tennis means eclipsing 20 grand slam titles is almost a forgone conclusion.

Per Reuters:

If she can stay healthy there is no doubt she can go into the 20s, the sky is the limit. I know how hard it is once you get to 30, all those little niggling injuries get worse and it’s much easier to have an off day. But still, she is in her 30s … she is eager and winning is very contagious – once you get really used to it, you don’t want to let go of it.

Navratilova continued:

At age 30, she had played about half the tournaments than I had played at 30, so she is fresh in tennis terms. She seems to be playing her best tennis right now.

The 2014 Australian Open will begin on Monday, January 13.
