New Texas Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong had an impressive defense last season when he was with the Louisville Cardinals, but his new team certainly could use some improvement on that side of the ball.
With the Longhorns struggles on defense, we all knew that Strong would be looking to make immediate improvements and he will reportedly begin the changes by bringing a fellow Louisville coach along with him to Austin.
According to Kirk Bohls of the Austin-American Statesman, Strong will hire Louisville defensive coordinator Vance Bedford to the same position on his Longhorns staff.
No agreement has been reached yet, but Bedford is expected to be on the Texas campus Wednesday.
Under Strong and Bedford, the Louisville defense finished 14th, 23rd, 23rd and 1st in FBS total defense. In 2013, they also finished second in the FBS in scoring defense.
If the pair can bring that same success to the Longhorns, then they could immediately erase any doubts from Longhorns fans and boosters that were still wondering why Texas didn’t decide to make a bigger splash.
