The Houston Texans and new head coach Bill O’Brien are rebuilding their coaching staff. One of the items on the agenda is replacing former defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans and O’Brien are interviewing Romeo Crennel for the position.

There were reports earlier that the Texans have hired Crennel already, but NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport clarified those rumors in a text exchange with Crennel.

Crennel didn’t coach during the 2013 season after being replaced by Andy Reid as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs following the 2012 season. Crennel has previously worked as a defensive coordinator in New England from 2001-2004 under Bill Belichick. O’Brien has also worked with Belichick in New England so there is that connection.
