Derek Mason among top candidates for Vanderbilt head coaching position

James Franklin has left the Vanderbilt Commodores to take the head coaching job with the Penn State Nittany Lions leaving Vanderbilt with perhaps the last major college coaching position to fill and according to football scoop, athletic director David Williams is acting fast.

“Sources tell us David Williams will move swiftly in hiring a new head coach. Have been told he considers Bob Shoop, Herb Hand and Stanford defensive coordinator Derek Mason strong candidates.”

The 47-year-old Shoop was hired as the defensive coordinator under Franklin and has been with the school since 2011. Hand is Vanderbilt’s offensive line coach and run game coordinator and has previously coached at Tulsa and West Virginia.

Derek Mason is Stanford’s associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator and viewed as a rising star in the coaching industry. He was rumored to be on the short list for the Louisville Cardinals job which ultimately went to Bobby Petrino.

Prior to coming to Stanford he coached the defensive backs with the Minnesota Vikings.
