According to Ian Begley and Marc Stein of ESPN.com, the New York Knicks are exploring trade options for J.R. Smith. The problem is that the Knicks are failing to find a trade partner willing to make a deal for Smith.
“Is it April Fool’s Day?” a rival executive asked SNY.tv‘s Adam Zagoria. “Of course [they want to trade him], but only an idiot would take him. Can Steve Mills trade him to himself?”
Smith’s problem child attitude combined with his slump is making him an undesirable player despite being the reigning Sixth Man of the Year. His 11.3 points per game average this season is currently the third lowest average of his career. The two lower totals came in the first two seasons he spent in the league.
CBS Sports‘ Ken Berger says that the Knicks have been trying to trade him for as long as two weeks but obviously haven’t been able to find a suitor.
“I hear Shanghai has a spot,” one executive told Berger. “Erie?” offered another.
It looks like the Knicks are stuck with him for a while unless he really gets going before the trade deadline.
