As we anxiously await to see whether or not Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin will ultimately be named the next head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions–as was reported on Thursday morning–we’re finding out that one candidate was in the running for the job for a lot longer than some th0ught.

According to Mike Poorman of StateCollege.com, one of the top candidates in Miami head coach Al Golden was informed late Thursday evening that he would no longer be considered for the position.

That became official with a perfunctory phone call from Penn State’s athletic director Dave Joyner to Golden’s agent in Philadelphia late Thursday afternoon: Golden was not going to be Penn State’s next head football coach.

Now this could have just been a formality on Joyner’s part to make the call and inform Golden that he was out of the running, but with the way that this whole process has played out, it’s fairly safe to assume that Golden may have still been considered up until Thursday.
