When the New York Yankees signed both Carlos Beltran and Jacoby Ellsbury this offseason, it was only a matter of time before the Bronx Bombers made a move.

Complete with a roster overloaded with outfielders, it was expected the Yankees would test the trade market but after finding little of nothing, they decided to cut ties with Vernon Wells, designating him for assignment this morning.

Per Buster Olney:

The Yankees have designated Vernon Wells for assignment, as they create roster spots on their 40-man.

New York reportedly attempted to offload Wells to teams in need of an outfielder, like the San Francisco Giants, but simply couldn’t find an interested party.

Wells will go on waivers though is unlikely to be claimed and will then enter free agency. Olney speculates teams with a need for a right handed power bat, like the Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays could have interest in Wells moving forward.

Wells, in limited action hit .233 with 11 home runs and 50 RBI for New York last season.
