The Washington Nationals were hopeful that they could avoid arbitration with ace Stephen Strasburg this offseason and their wish was granted after the two sides agreed on a new deal.
After some negotiations, Strasburg signed a one-year deal which includes a modest raise over his 2013 salary for $3.9 million dollars.
Per Jon Heyman:
stephen strasburg gets $3.975M plus performance bonuses for 2014, avoiding arbitration.
The Nationals are likely pondering when they make an offer to lock Strasburg up long term and to buy out his arbitration years, though they likely want to see a full season (or two) of health from their young ace.
For all the talent he has, there are some concerns about his injury history and Washington understandably doesn’t want to get caught with their pants down in a mega deal with an oft-injured arm.
For now, it’s a one-year deal, though hopefully by the end of the 2014 season both sides will be talking about a long term extension which should make all parties happy.
