The New York Mets are in need of some veteran starting pitching, though I’m not sure fans were expecting one of their key offseason signings to be Freddy Garcia.
That could end up being the case though as the Mets are reportedly engaged in talks with the veteran arm:
The Mets intend to sign a fifth-starter candidate on a minor-league contract to compete with Jenrry Mejia and the team’s prospects, who include Rafael Montero and Jacob deGrom. And while it is not clear where he resides on the Mets’ preference list, there has been at least some dialogue between Mets officials and the representatives for Freddy Garcia.
Garcia was below average as a member of the Baltimore Orioles during the 2013 season though had a mild resurgence with the Atlanta Braves after a late season acquisition, though the sample size was relatively small.
Granted – any deal wouldn’t be for much more than a spring training invite/emergency starter type but even then, Garcia doesn’t seem likely to bring much.
