MLB Rumors: Texas Rangers still speaking to Nelson Cruz

The Texas Rangers have all but stretched their budget for the 2014 season and have replaced Nelson Cruz in the outfield with Shin-Soo Choo.

So with little money left and Choo taking over a starting outfield spot, there’s no chance Cruz returns to the Rangers, right? Not so fast.

While a return is still relatively unlikely, general manager Jon Daniels says he’s still been in contact with Cruz’s agent:

Responding to a question from the audience, Daniels said he has maintained contact with Cruz’ agent, Adam Katz, and will continue to do so.

“Love the player and wish him well,” Daniels said. “Crazier things have happened, but I think it’s highly unlikely he’ll be back. He’d have a better opportunity elsewhere.”

Cruz has struggled to find a deal this offseason likely due to his suspension for PED’s during the 2013 season.

While other suspended players haven’t struggled to find deals, Cruz has a game built off power and little else which has forced some teams to balk at his asking price.

That has lead to some suggesting Cruz may need to take a cheap one-year deal to reestablish his value, which is likely why the Rangers are still leaving communications open.
