After what were likely team issued ‘trade rumors’ and a benching, the New York Knicks were hoping their ‘threats’ got through to swingman, J.R. Smith.
Maybe they did. Maybe they didn’t.
Smith was re-inserted into the Knicks’ lineup on Saturday afternoon and suggested that he learned his lesson, in the most J.R. Smith of ways:
“Don’t goof around, I guess. Be serious. Be a professional. And just don’t take this opportunity here you have for granted,” he said. “There’s a lot of people in this world that want our jobs. You can’t take it for granted. It can be taken away just that fast.”
Only, J.R. Smith.
That explanation wouldn’t have been half bad if not for the ‘I guess’ part. Of course, it wouldn’t have been overly believable either way, but that seemed beyond forced.
Apology or not, head coach Mike Woodson isn’t so sure it’s genuine:
“He’s been telling me that since I got here,” Smith said Saturday morning. “Honestly, ‘growing up,’ I don’t know if I really understand the true meaning of it.”
