While many teams attempted to woo Japanese sensation Masahiro Tanaka, they were never serious suitors for his services.
Unless you were a major market team, the chances to sign the 25-year-old arm were slim to none – a sentiment that a report out of Japan shares.
According to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times, who translated the report, Tanaka has narrowed his potential finalists down to the New York Yankees, Anaheim Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers:
In addition, Hernandez suggested that the report mentions the Yankees are currently in the lead to sign Tanaka (who exactly is shocked here?) though suggested nothing is written in stone as of yet.
A few other major market teams, like the Boston Red Sox, were said to have interest in Tanaka but simply weren’t willing to pay such an elevated price while teams like the Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks may be left on the outside looking in.
