NBA admits refs botched call at end of Dallas-New Orleans game

The NBA released a statement on Sunday saying the referees in Saturday night’s game between the Dallas Mavericks and the New Orleans Pelicans missed a foul call on the game’s final play.

In case you missed the controversial ending, Pelicans guard Austin Rivers tried to hoist a shot over Mavericks guard Monta Ellis. No foul was called on the play despite there being significant contact, and the Mavericks won the game 110-107.

Here’s what the league had to say about the play Sunday:

After reviewing postgame video, we have determined a foul should have been called on Dallas’ Monta Ellis for illegal contact on the arms of New Orleans’ Austin Rivers while Rivers was attempting a three-point field goal. Rivers should have been awarded three free throws with 0.6 left on the clock (Pro Basketball Talk).

New Orleans coach Monty Williams wasn’t pleased after the heartbreaking loss, calling the gaffe “embarrassing” and “not right.”
