NBA Rumors: Spurs acquiring J.R. Smith in trade is laughable

Last week, former Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl went on a New York radio station and suggested J.R. Smith needed a change of scenery to save his career.

Karl, who coached Smith in Denver hinted the San Antonio Spurs should attempt to acquire the volatile shooting guard from the New York Knicks, a suggestion that a Spurs official deemed as laughable:

A Spurs staffer laughed at that Saturday and thanked Karl with considerable sarcasm. Does Karl have any other terrific ideas such as, oh, bringing back Dennis Rodman to work in marketing?

The Spurs of course, don’t have any interest in Smith (understandably) and have no plans to acquire him. The suggestion from Karl was seemingly a way to praise the Spurs organization for their work with questionable NBA personalities who’ve thrived in their system such as Stephen Jackson.

Regardless, a lack of interest in Smith doesn’t mean the Spurs aren’t checking prices on available talent as reports leaked earlier in the week suggesting San Antonio was abnormally active in trade talks.
