Rangers' Derek Holland: Playing with dog, not hockey, caused knee injury

The Texas Rangers starting rotation took a hit when Derek Holland injured his left knee. He’ll be out till the All-Star break after undergoing surgery Friday to repair torn cartilage and other damage.

There was some speculation that this was a result of him playing hockey, but he denied that.

“I played the full game, and nothing happened,” Holland said, via the Dallas Morning News. “It’s sad that people have to look for something like that.”

He has since elaborated saying it was playing with his dog that caused the injury.

“I was running around with the dog and took off up the stairs,” said Holland. “He chased me and ran up under me and undercut me, and I slammed my head on the steps.

“It could have been worse. I could have cracked my head open. I was doing a typical guy thing, clowning around with the dog thing, and this happened.”
