The San Diego Chargers learned on Monday evening that offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt would be leaving the team to take over as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans. With Whisenhunt out as the Chargers offensive coordinator, it leaves an opening on their coaching staff.

With the team now needing to fill a void on the staff of head coach Mike McCoy, they have an internal candidate that is expected to receive the promotion — quarterbacks coach Frank Reich.

From Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network:

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers saw his play improve drastically from a season ago under Reich’s direction and the two built a solid working relationship, so the promotion would make sense.

Prior to joining the Chargers staff as the quarterbacks coach, he served as an assistant with the Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts.
