FIFA Ballon d’Or 2013: Lionel Messi votes for all Barcelona players, not himself though

The FIFA Ballon d’Or trophy was handed out on Monday in Zurich. Portugal international and Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo won the award. His win ends a run of trophies for Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi.

Not only are the two personal rivals as they’re usually compared as the best player in the world, their clubs are rivals. The Classico between Barcelona and Real Madrid is one of the biggest matches in soccer.

Lionel Messi didn’t extend an olive branch to his La Liga rival in Ballon d’Or voting though. He voted straight Barcelona for the award for the best male player in the world. Interestingly he didn’t vote for himself to win the award, though after winning the award four times in a row you don’t need to vote for yourself probably.

Still it is kind of odd that he would leave Ronaldo off his ballot. Ronaldo clearly had a stellar year and it kind of breaks the spirit of the award to vote solely for your club teammates.

Messi’s ballot:

  1. Andres Iniesta
  2. Xavi
  3. Neymar

Of course, Ronaldo didn’t vote for him or any Barcelona players either. See all the voting results for the 2013 FIFA Ballon d’Or here.
