There was a time not that long ago when Cleveland Browns general manager Mike Lombardi wrote for the National Football Post before moving to the NFL Network and eventually the Browns front office.
During his tenure with the NFP, Lombardi always seemed to have something positive to say about running back Ben Tate, who just so happens to be a free agent this offseason.
The Browns need a running back.
So do Lombari’s previous comments about the Houston Texans running back from 2010 still hold weight?
Ben Tate (second round) is the right back for the Texans’ system. He has an ability to hit the hole with a burst and is a one-cut runner. In their offense, he might be rookie of the year.
It’s a bit strange to have a glimpse into the mind of somebody who would eventually become a front office executive and given the Browns needs, one would think Tate could be a top target – especially given Lombardi’s glowing reviews of the player.
Of course, that was three seasons ago but Tate looked very good with the Texans this past season and will simply be too costly for Houston to retain.
