Stanford OG David Yankey declaring for the NFL Draft according to Joe Schad

Stanford offensive guard David Yankey has declared for the NFL Draft.  This was an expected move by the redshirt junior who has not only been a great guard and spent time at left tackle for the Cardinal, but he has graduated.  As a result, Yankey would be eligible to participate in the Reese’s Senior Bowl under their underclassmen rules they established last season.  Yankey is the next in a developing line of talented blockers from Stanford.

The adjustment from Stanford to an NFL style of blocking can be slightly difficult because they use so many situations with tighter splits that make it easier for them to lock on and drive opponents in run blocking.  This should be less problematic for Yankey with his experience at tackle last year as he is more accustomed to playing in space, but it has been a trend that has shown up in former Stanford linemen including Jonathan Martin and David DeCastro.  Yankey has a chance to be the first interior linemen picked in this year’s draft, but it will be a tough competition.
