With James Franklin now in place as the 16th head coach in Penn State Nittany Lions history, it’s now time for the coaching staff around him to start taking shape, and that will start with his defensive coordinator from Vanderbilt joining him as Bob Shoop is reportedly headed up north as well.

Shoop has been Franklin’s defensive coordinator with the Commodores for all three seasons that the new Penn State coach was at the helm, and served as head coach at Columbia before that.
As far as performance goes, the Commodores defense was among the worst in all of college football before Franklin and Shoop arrived in 2011. At the end of this season, Vandy’s defensive ranks were significantly better than they were when the two got there as they finished 46th in points allowed and and impressive 23rd in total defense at 355.9 yards per game.
