With their head coaching position now vacant, the Vanderbilt Commodores are now looking for a new head man that can hopefully keep up the momentum that was built by former head coach James Franklin before he left for Penn State earlier this week.
According to Jeremy Fowler of CBS, that search will now turn to Stanford defensive coordinator Derek Mason.
Through the last few seasons, defense has been one of the main staples of the recent string of successful Cardinal teams under David Shaw. Among all teams in college football, the Stanford defense has ranked right near the top in the majority of the statistical categories.
As far as competition for the open job goes, if Mason indeed does want it, that got a little bit easier on Monday morning when it was announced that Vandy defensive coordinator Bob Shoop will be headed to Penn State with Franklin. Shoop was considered a possible contender to be promoted.
Also, for anyone that assumed that this job would be something that people wouldn’t want to covet, Vanderbilt getting an interview with a top coordinator from a BCS conference is a very good sign.
