Following the suspension of Alex Rodriguez and his subsequent removal from the Yankees’ 40-man roster, Brian Roberts can officially say he wears pinstripes. The finalization was reported by Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) on Twitter.
The contract is for one year at a guaranteed $2 million. There are several incentives attached to it, all based on plate appearances. The maximum extra that Roberts can earn will be $400 thousand if he has anywhere between 600-650 PAs.
With Robinson Cano now wearing a Seattle Mariners‘ uniform, Roberts figures to be in competition with Kelly Johnson to be the starting second baseman for New York. Roberts has played all thirteen years of his career with the Baltimore Orioles at second base. He is a career .278/.349/.412 hitter. By comparison, Cano hit .309/.355/.504 in his nine years with the Yankees.
