Fiesta Bowl executive director Robert Shelton resigned out of the blue on Tuesday morning. Shelton, who is set to become the president of the Research Corporation for Science Advancement in Tucson, took over the Fiesta Bowl directorship in 2011 after former head John Junker was discovered to be involved in a corruption scandal.
Shelton offered the following statement about his resignation:
I think this is a great transition point for the Fiesta Bowl. I thank the Fiesta Bowl’s 2,900 volunteers, including the board of directors, for the opportunity to help restore this wonderful community institution. I have truly enjoyed serving the organization during a difficult time and feel confident we have placed the organization in a solid position for the future (Phoenix Business Journal).
Along with helping navigate the corruption scandal, Shelton was also instrumental in securing the Fiesta Bowl a sport in the College Football Playoff rotation.
