I guess after signing Robinson Cano, any player the Seattle Mariners sign will be a dissapointment – but that doesn’t mean it won’t be a good move.

Case in point? According to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports, the Seattle Mariners are ‘very close’ on a one-year deal with catcher, John Buck.

Buck will be signed as a backup to the offensively charged Mike Zunino.

The Mariners of course want to have security in case Zunino struggles and Buck was likely the best veteran catcher still available on the market.

More telling than just the signing of Buck though is what this means for former top prospect, ‘catcher’ Jesus Montero. Could the Mariners attempt to have him change positions? Or have they simply tired of him and will look to move him to a team hoping to squeeze out any remaining potential?

Whatever the case, the addition of the defensive minded Buck isn’t good news for Montero’s future in Seattle.
