Notre Dame Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly went on Sirius XM radio this morning and announced that he would be the one assuming the offensive play calling duties in 2014 with the departure of former offensive coordinator Chuck Martin to Miami (OH). That still didn’t mean that they weren’t going to hire someone to the official position of offensive coordinator, which they did on Tuesday announcing that wide receivers coach Mike Denbrock would be taking the role.
When Martin departed in December, Denbrock took over the interim offensive coordinator duties. The Irish’s new offensive coordinator has a history with Kelly in this role as he was the offensive coordinator when the two were at Grand Valley State together back in the early 90s.
Still, despite this, Kelly will indeed still be calling the plays offensively as he stated on Tuesday. Denbrock will work closely with Kelly during the week in drawing up the game plans, but Kelly will be the one making the decisions once the whistle blows on Saturdays.
