The Number One Overall Draft Pick of the 2013 MLB Draft may have a chance to show what he’s learned a year and a half after he signed a contract. The Houston Astros have officially invited Mark Appel out of Stanford College to Major League Spring Training.

Appel was picked in the 8th round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates after being projected to be the first overall pick, but had already committed to playing for and attending Stanford in his senior year. During that time, he recorded a 2.12 ERA with 130 strikeouts on his way to a 10-4 record over 106.1 IP.

The Houston-born Appel was shut down in August of 2013 with 140 innings under his belt in Class A ball. It is doubtful that he will make his big league debut at the start of the season for the Astros and the club may just be looking to see how he’s progressing.
