The Baltimore Orioles have expressed some hope that they might have blue-chip third baseman Manny Machado on the roster before opening day of the 2014 season.
Machado will skip a team mini-camp this week, but it not a setback. Rather, it is a good sign as Machado might be cleared to resume baseball activities on Thursday as he works his way back from surgery on his left knee.
Orioles third baseman Manny Machado, who is coming off offseason surgery on his left knee, will not attend this week’s minicamp at the Ed Smith Stadium complex.
“Instead, he is scheduled to visit Dodgers team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Thursday in Los Angeles to get clearance to resume baseball activities.
“Machado is now scheduled to arrive in Sarasota for spring training on Feb. 6, a full week before pitchers and catchers report.”
Known for his wizardry in the field above all else, Machado’s presence is also key for the Baltimore lineup. In 2013 he batted .283/.314/.432 with an astounding 51 doubles. Considering the fact that the team actually signed Delmon Young yesterday, I would say that having Machado’s bat in the lineup is an important part of the picture for the Orioles.
